The Game of Dominoes
The game of dominoes is played in a sequence of moves in which a player must place all of their dominoes so that all of their doubles are adjacent. Players take turns picking dominoes from the stock and shuffle their hands after each turn. Some versions require both partners to chip out. In a game where both players chip out, a winning pair has the fewest number of spots on the dominoes.
The basic domino game is played with a double-six set. In this game, each player draws seven tiles from the set and alternately extends the line of play until both players have an empty hand. After the first player blocks the other player, the winner is the one with the highest score, equal to the remaining pip count in the losing player’s hand. The second-most basic variant is known as the “block” or “draw” domino game. This variant is played with double-six or double-nine domino sets. A game of this type usually involves four players.
In addition to the traditional European-style dominoes, you can also purchase modern-day versions made of stone or bone. Some European-style dominoes have ivory or silver lip ocean pearl shell pips. Other dominoes feature contrasting black or white pips and top and lower halves are made of dark hardwood, such as ebony. Many domino sets are also made of soapstone or marble.
