Domino is a word that evokes the idea of dominance, power and control. The word itself traces back to the Latin word dominus, which means “lord” or “master.” In ancient Rome, where the Latin language flourished, it was often used as a title for people of high rank. In modern times, the word continues to carry this sense of authority, especially in business, where it has become synonymous with success and leadership.
Domino’s Pizza
One of the most famous uses of the word domino is for a chain of pizza restaurants run by a man named Tom Monaghan. In the 1960s, he launched Domino’s in Ypsilanti, Michigan, with the goal of offering pizza that was delivered quickly. The strategy worked, and the company quickly grew. By 1978, Domino’s had over 200 locations.
The word domino also refers to a game played with a set of rectangular tiles with a total of twenty-four pip marks on each side. The players alternately place one domino edge to edge with another, and the object of the game is to get all the dominoes to fall over. The resulting chains of dominoes can be quite large and complex, and it is quite impressive to see a domino show, in which builders create mind-blowing setups that demonstrate how the pieces interlock.
The game of dominoes is a popular pastime for many people, and there are countless variations of the basic rules. The most common way to play is in a group, with the objective of placing a domino so that it covers a number of other dominoes in a row or column. The player who successfully completes this task wins the game.
When a domino falls, it releases its potential energy into kinetic energy, which in turn pushes on the next domino. This process is repeated over and over, until the final domino falls. In addition to the traditional dominoes made from plastic, they are available in sets in other materials. These include bone, silver lip ocean pearl oyster shell (mother of pearl), ivory and ebony with contrasting black or white pips. They are sometimes made from carved stone, or metals such as brass and pewter.
Domino (Marvel Comics)
Domino is a mutant who possesses the ability to disrupt electronic systems. She has a powerful telepathic link with her twin brother Cable, and their relationship has shaped the course of the X-Men franchise. Domino joined the Six Pack when they were recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Danielle Moonstar to prevent the clandestine Weapon X program from being exposed through an Operation: Zero Tolerance raid. Domino later helped restructure X-Force after it was reorganized by Cable.
Domino is also known for her involvement in Mutant Evangelism, an organization founded to promote the cause of mutant rights and acceptance by humans. Later, she helped investigate the cyborg Reavers, led by Donald Pierce, who had captured Milo Thurman to gain his prophetic powers through cybernetic conversion.
