How to Become a Blackjack Dealer

Blackjack is one of the most popular casino card games. It is easy to learn and the rules are straightforward. While the game has a house advantage, there are ways to minimize it. The most important thing is to understand how the game works and make smart decisions. The game is played by two or more players against the dealer. The goal is to beat the dealer by getting a hand value of 21 or higher.

Before the cards are dealt, a casino dealer must shuffle and mix the deck(s) of cards to ensure that the order is random. Then the dealer deals each player two cards, starting with the player to their left. The dealer also receives a card, which is called their hole card. The dealer will then either hit (get another card) or stand on their current hand.

If a player gets an ace and a face card or ten card (totaling 21 in two cards) on the initial deal, it is considered a natural. The dealer will pay the player one and a half times their bet. However, if the dealer has a natural too, it is considered a push and the player will keep their original bet.

Some casinos have changed the rules of blackjack to reduce the payout on blackjacks to 6 to 5. This increases the house edge and makes it much harder to win money at this table game. In addition, many of the side bets on a blackjack table can add up to large losses over time.

To become a blackjack dealer, candidates must complete a training program provided by the casino or gaming establishment they plan to work for. The training usually covers the rules and procedures of the game, as well as customer service skills and gaming regulations. Some programs may also require that the candidate pass a background check and have specific education or work experience.

After the players have placed their bets, a blackjack dealer will distribute the cards to each player. They will start with the player to their left and move clockwise. When the dealer is done dealing, they will place their own card in front of them and then sweep up the used cards into a discard tray. The cards are then reshuffled and the round starts again.

There are several different sides bets on a blackjack table, and they can be very lucrative for a skilled player. Some of these side bets include doubling down, insurance, and the dealer’s up-card. However, these side bets can also add up to big losses if the player is not careful. A good way to avoid this is by understanding how each side bet works and when it is appropriate to make a bet.
